What are the most popular hiding places for raccoons on your property and how can you prevent them from moving in?

While you want to attract some animals to your yard, like beautiful songbirds at your bird feeders and adorable bunnies in your garden, you probably don’t want to find raccoons on your property. These pests are infamous for eating just about anything and living just about anywhere. What are the most popular hiding places for raccoons on your property and how can you prevent them from moving in?

What Do Raccoons Look For?

Raccoons are attracted to any environment that is quiet, dark, and without much human activity. Raccoons will enter your home by climbing or digging and look for places that seem uninhabited and infrequently occupied. The most common places to find raccoons on your property include:

  • Basements: Basements are typically dark and quiet and not frequently visited, so raccoons can camp out for a week before ever realizing that you live there too!
  • Attics: Attics are also frequently ignored, so raccoons will hide out and enjoy the space. Attics with stored food and cozy places to hide, like piles of old bedding and your wedding dress, will definitely be a hit with raccoons.
  • Crawl Spaces: Do you have a crawl space underneath your house? That is a popular hideout for many types of animals, including rabbits, foxes, and groundhogs.
  • Walls: If you have large amounts of space between your walls, raccoons might find a crafty way to sneak in and start their home between two of your walls.
  • Bathrooms: Bathrooms are very rarely occupied by raccoons, since they are used frequently, but guest bathrooms that are neglected can become hot spots for raccoon activity.
  • Chimneys: Chimneys are, hands down, the most common place to find raccoons on your property. They are dark and quiet and often not used at all during the spring and summer months. As a result, raccoons will start their family in an unused chimney.
